The Maritime Risk and Safety Group (MARS) at Dalhousie University is co-founded by Prof. Dr. Floris Goerlandt and Prof. Dr. Ron Pelot. It continues, extends, and diversifies the work performed in the Marine Risk Investigation Network (MARIN) founded by Prof. Dr. Ron Pelot in the 1990’s.
The MARS group commits to high-quality academic research with practical relevance for the safety and environmental sustainability of maritime activities. We also endeavor to deepen the scientific understanding of fundamental questions, in particular related to validity in risk and safety research.
In our educational role, we commit to world-class graduate and undergraduate research training in an interdisciplinary environment. Combining group-level and individual guidance and support, we strive to educate future experts and leaders in industry and academia. We actively support the internationalization of academic education and research. We welcome industry-based graduate research, and actively support postdoctoral fellows in advancing their academic career.
Our societal engagement aims to actively engage with stakeholder needs, both to learn from field experts as well as to disseminate research. We achieve this by organizing workshops and seminars, and by participating in academic and professional working groups. Finally, we take an active leadership role in academic service, by serving on journal editorial teams and in conference committees.
